To the naked eye, the baseball cap has remained largely unchanged throughout the years. It’s an enduring silhouette. A testament to the game itself.

But looks can be deceiving.

While the style remains a classic, the feel is anything but. In fact, New Era’s caps are infused with revolutionary technology and cutting edge advancements in headwear engineering. And it’s only getting better.

New Era entered the baseball world in 1934, producing caps for the Cleveland Indians. As the list of clientele grew, so did the company’s resolve to create the best product on the field.

In 1954 the real ingenuity began. That year the modern 59FIFTY was created. Harold Koch, the son of New Era’s founder Ehrhardt, redesigned the fitted cap to give a more contemporary, structured look. The true fitted was born.

It wouldn’t be the last mark New Era would make on Major League Baseball. Minor modifications were added throughout the years - and in 2007 New Era revolutionized performance headwear.

By moving away from using wool and instead producing polyester caps, the headwear became more durable and resistant to shrinkage and stretching when wet. Also, changing the color of the under visor from gray to black reduced the glare from the sun and from stadium lights.

Technology properties were also introduced in 2007. The on-field caps utilized moisture management technology in a performance fabric with quick-drying properties to provide comfort to every player. This was the first major overhaul to the baseball cap since the 59FIFTY was created.

The technology works to wick, or draw, moisture away from the skin and spread it out. Even the sweatband was updated with performance wicking technology so that moisture does not build up at that point either. The performance fabric also works to accelerate the drying of the cap, resulting in a more comfortable player and cap.

And that’s not all.

Beginning in 2012, New Era is infusing even more technology into the on-field caps, adding UV protection and infrared reflecting fabric to the list of innovations. These headwear advancements will work to keep players more comfortable when things heat up.

And the on-field caps aren’t just for baseball anymore. As the official on-field cap of the NFL, New Era’s football caps will also be produced with performance technology. From training camp to game day, the NFL caps have been designed with the athlete in mind.

So when the players take the field in 2012, it may appear that they’re just wearing a baseball cap on the sidelines. But looks can be deceiving.
