Sticker On or Sticker Off? The Debate Every New Era Wearer Has Had

New Era answers the question every cap owner eventually faces: do you keep the visor sticker on, or take it off?

Your Cap, Your Rules

Every New Era owner hits the same moment. You pull a fresh hat out of the box, and there it is: the metallic sticker, staring back at you. Do you leave it on? Peel it off? Split the difference and slice it in half?

Whether you wear the iconic 59FIFTY®, the adjustable 9TWENTY®, or the stretch fit 39THIRTY®, there is no wrong answer. But the sticker is not just packaging you forgot to remove. It has a real history, and depending on who is wearing the cap, it has a deeper meaning than a simple sticker. So before you make the call, here is the story of how a shelf-tag became a cultural symbol, and why "your cap, your rules" is our official take.

Why the Sticker Exists in the First Place

The visor sticker was not born as a style statement. It started as a fix for a very practical retail problem.

Retailers were running into an issue on the sales floor: shoppers digging through bins of fitted caps looking for their exact size were destroying displays in the process. New Era needed a way to show size options front and center without customers having to try on every cap in the stack. The sticker was the solution. It displayed the fit, the size, and eventually New Era branding and web address, all in one clean visor tag.

It was functional. It was practical. And then it became something more.

From Shelf Tag to Status Symbol

As New Era moved from a headwear manufacturer into a sports and lifestyle brand, our caps started showing up in unexpected places: off the field, on stage, and in the streets where hip hop culture was taking shape.

The people driving that movement were not just building new music and new style. They were representing where they came from, and the 59FIFTY®, as the authentic cap of Major League Baseball, became a key element of that expression. Wearing the cap with the sticker on became a way of signaling something specific: this is the real thing, not a knockoff, and I know exactly what I am wearing.

That is how a sticker meant as a practical solution turned into a cultural phenomenon and hotly-debated topic. It was never designed to be a fashion statement. Culture made it one anyway.

A Design That Kept Evolving

Although the question has always remained the same, the sticker itself has changed. It has been redesigned, reworked, and occasionally rolled back after fans pushed back hard enough to bring the old look home. A quick look at the timeline:

  • 1997/98: The very first visor sticker, developed to launch New Era's new branding.

  • 2000/2001: A more ambitious redesign introduced color coded style recognition: gold for 59FIFTY®, blue for 49FORTY®, red for 29TWENTY®. Fans pushed back almost immediately, and New Era reverted to an updated version of the original a black and gold design by 2001/2002.

  • 2002-04: Back to black and gold, now featuring the "It's Not a Cap, It's a Flag" tagline and updated fonts.

  • 2004: The logo evolved again, bringing the flag and the New Era wordmark together, reversing the black and gold to bring out more of the metallic shine, and refining the layout around the 59FIFTY® mark. Aside from small adjustments throughout the year, this has remained the template for years.

  • 2007-15: A full visor overlay was introduced to communicate the technical features of Authentic Collection caps, MLB® certified and on-field ready. It was designed so it could be peeled away, leaving the original gold sticker intact underneath, in case a wearer wanted the badge without the extra decal. Plenty of people left it on anyway.

  • 2015-Present: New Era simplified the entire visor sticker program into a clean gold and silver system: gold for all fitted caps, and silver for every other style. The design moved away from the full visor overlay and returned to the simple, iconic sticker that is still used today.

Every version tells the same story from a different angle: a sticker that started as a practical tool kept getting redesigned because people cared enough about it to notice, and to push back when it changed.

So, Sticker On or Sticker Off?

Here is where we land: there is no official right answer, and there never will be. Some people keep the sticker on because it is proof of authenticity, a nod to where the cap came from and who has worn it before them. Others take it off because a clean, uninterrupted visor is exactly the look they are going for. Both are correct. Both involve you wearing your cap the way you want to wear it.
