New Era Cap Size Guide: Your Best Fit

New Era Size Guide

Getting the right fit starts with one measurement. Below you'll find simple instructions for measuring your head, plus everything you need to find your size before you shop.

How to Measure Your Head

All you need is a flexible tape measure or a piece of string and a ruler.

Follow these steps for an accurate measurement:

  1. Place the tape measure in the middle of your forehead, directly where the sweatband will rest.

  2. Wrap it evenly around your head, keeping it level, about 1 inch above your eyebrows in the front, and around the widest part of your head in the back.

  3. Note your measurement in inches or centimeters. New Era's charts use both, so either works.

  4. If you landed between two sizes, we recommend rounding up. A fitted cap that's slightly roomy is wearable; one that's too tight isn't.

  5. Measure twice and go with the larger number, as tape tension and placement can shift your reading.

No measuring tape? Use string and a ruler. Wrap a piece of string the same way: 1 inch above your eyebrows, above your ears, around the widest part of your skull. Mark where it overlaps, lay it flat against a ruler, and read the measurement.

Fitted vs. Adjustable: The Benefits of a True Fitted Closure

New Era caps come in three closure types. Each serves a different purpose.

True Fitted caps like the 59FIFTY® and its variants have a closed back with no hardware. They are sized to an exact head circumference in eighth-inch increments.

Benefits of a true fitted cap:

  • Precision fit. Cut to a specific circumference, a fitted cap sits level and stable without adjusting or slipping during movement.

  • Clean silhouette. No strap, snap, or buckle at the back means an uninterrupted profile from every angle. The structured crown holds its shape throughout the day.

  • Authentic on-field heritage. True fitted sizing is how caps have been worn on professional fields for decades. Every New Era on-field licensed cap is a 59FIFTY® Fitted.

Adjustable caps like the 9FIFTY® Snapback, 9FORTY® Strapback, and 9TWENTY® use an open back with a snap, strap, or buckle closure. They come in S/M, M/L, L/XL or One Size Fits Most, working across a range of head sizes.

Stretch-fit caps like the 39THIRTY® sit between the two. A closed back with a patented stretch sweatband gives the clean silhouette of a fitted cap while offering some flexibility within each size.

Women's Sizing

Women's New Era caps are not scaled-down men's styles. They are built with distinct cuts and contoured proportions developed specifically for women's head shapes, and feature a smaller visor than men's equivalents.

Kids' Sizing

Kids' New Era caps are organized by age tier, not a single universal size. Each tier reflects a typical head circumference range at that stage of development. Measure the child's head the same way as an adult: 1 inch above the eyebrows and around the widest point.

Kids' fitted styles (59FIFTY®): sizes 6 through 6-3/4 (48.2 – 53.9 cm).

Kids' adjustable styles (9FIFTY®, 9FORTY®, 9TWENTY®, 19TWENTY®): available across Infant, Toddler, Child, and Youth sizes. Select the tier that matches the child's age and head size.

Kids' stretch-fit styles (39THIRTY®, 39THIRTY® M-Crown): sizes spanning Toddler/Child through Child/Youth.

Kids' sizes also are available in bucket hats and knits. See the size chart for exact sizing.

Fitted Size to S/M, M/L, and L/XL Conversion Chart

Stretch-fit styles like the 39THIRTY® and non-adjustable styles such as bucket hats and painter hats use S/M, M/L, and L/XL in place of exact measurements. If you know your fitted number, use this chart to find your equivalent size. For exact measurement to size conversions, see the cap's size chart.

Stretch-fit bands have built-in give. If your fitted size falls at the boundary between two bands (for example, 7-3/8 at the top of S/M), either band may work depending on how close to the head you prefer your fit. When in doubt, size up for stretch-fit styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my New Era cap size?

Measure around your head about 1 inch above your eyebrows, keeping the tape level and above your ears. Take the measurement twice and use the larger number. If you're between sizes, go up—not down. No tape measure? A piece of string and a ruler works just as well.

What is the difference between fitted and adjustable New Era caps?

Fitted caps—like the 59FIFTY®—are sized to an exact head circumference in eighth-inch increments, with a closed back and no adjustable hardware. That closed back gives a clean silhouette from every angle, and because the cap is built to a specific measurement, the crown structure, visor proportion, and sweatband are all engineered for that size. You need to know your head measurement to shop fitted styles. Adjustable caps like the 9FIFTY®, 9FORTY®, and 9TWENTY®, close with a strap, snap, or stretch-snap and come in S/M, M/L, L/XL bands or One Size Fits Most, so they work across a range of head sizes without a precise measurement. Stretch-fit styles like the 39THIRTY® use a closed back with a patented stretch sweatband, giving you the clean look of a fitted cap with some flexibility across a size band.

What size is a 7 1/4 in cm?

Size 7 1/4 is a 22 3/4-inch circumference, or 57.7 cm. On adjustable and stretch-fit styles, that puts you right at the S/M and M/L boundary; either band could work depending on how you like your fit.

Are New Era caps available in women's sizes?

Yes. New Era offers women's-specific silhouettes, including the Women's 59FIFTY®, Women's 9FIFTY®, Women's 9FORTY®, and Women's 9TWENTY®, and the Open Back Ponytail. All styles are built with cuts and contours developed specifically for women's head shapes. Women's fitted sizing begins at size 6-3/4 (53.9 cm), one step smaller than the standard men's fitted range.

What sizes do New Era kids' caps come in?

Kids' caps are organized by four age tiers: Infant, Toddler, Child, and Youth. Kids' fitted styles, like the 59FIFTY®, run from size 6 to 6-3/4 (48.2 – 53.9 cm). Kids' adjustable snapback styles are labeled by tier rather than a head measurement. Kids' stretch-fit styles, like the 39THIRTY®, cover sizes 51.1 – 53.9 cm and span Toddler through Youth.

How do I convert my fitted cap size to S/M, M/L, or L/XL?

Stretch-fit and some adjustable styles use size bands instead of exact measurements. Find your fitted size and see the chart above to find the corresponding band. If you fall on the edge of two bands, go up if you prefer a more relaxed fit.
